"Music can serve as a diversion, an entertainment, an ambiance, a communication tool or as a spiritual focal point. It depends on the musician to which end the music is created. But the practical purpose it serves depends on the listener. A great book can just as easily be used for study as for a door-stop."

Jarek Czechowicz first explored the guitar in his early teens playing popular music. His interest in improvisation and composition soon prompted him to seek new directions. A study of electronic music with Australian composer Felix Werder led to the production of composed and improvised electronic music for radio. Jarek later introduced students to electronic music through a Victorian Colleges program at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. During this period he also performed concerts of New Music and electronic music with Felix Werder and jazz-guitar veteran Bruce Clarke.

In 1979 Jarek took private tuition with Witold Rudzinski, senior professor of composition at the Chopin Academy of Music in Warsaw. This led to a number of well received performances of his works and a strong interest in chamber music, particularly the string quartet. During the 1980s he formed the guitar duo The Name with classical guitarist Alan Lem. Together they performed daily in Polish Theatres during the Solidarity uprisings. While with the Powszechny Theatre they were awarded first prize in the 1981 Polish National Theatre Competition. Their collaboration continued in Australia producing a series of live concerts and recordings.

In the 1990s Jarek formed Deja with flautist David James. As artistic director of Deja Jarek often invited talented musicians to collaborate in live performances and recordings of improvised music. Many of these recordings are yet to be published. In addition to performing Jarek has engineered and produced four compact discs of improvised music titled Once (1992), Gift (1998), You Are Here (2000) and In Search of The Heart Treasure (2002).

In addition to his music projects from 1999 - 2004 Jarek contributed regular articles and feature stories to Management Today magazine on topics of management and leadership.

Jarek is currently leading meditation and music programs called Peace Music, for awakening consciousness. These programs also include chanting, intuitive improvised music and spiritual teachings.

Transformation

"Jarek Czechowicz makes his Carson-Crickmore instrument sound, variously, like a Celtic harp and a koto."
Chris Boyd, Great Discs, The Australian Financial Review.

Clarity

"Such is the delicate 'attack' on the steel string guitar that at times it sounds like a nylon string. Even when it is played more fully, it is always clear and bell-like." Rodney Waterman, The Boite Magazine.

Inspiration

Jarek's guitar music has been inspired by the likes of Jimi Hendrix, John McLaughlin, Jo Pass and Paco De Lucia. His compositional influences include the music of J.S.Bach, Chopin, Johannes Ockeghem, Orlando de Lassus, Henryk Gorecki and Arvo Part.
