The age of the specialist seems to
be drawing to a close. There is a clear transition not only in
the arts but in the workforce toward 'generalism'. Alvin Toffler
once said that the illiterate of the future will be those who
cannot learn and unlearn. It now seems that those who are
prepared to learn more increase their capacity for learning just
by doing so. This is evident in the music of David James who is
also a management theorist and former Shakespearian scholar.
David James is a self taught flautist whose interests
include popular music and jazz, particularly the music of Miles
Davis. David has performed for many years in ensembles ranging
from big bands through Brazilian jazz groups and various
duets.
In 1990 David received a PhD in English literature after
completing his doctoral thesis on the works of Shakespeare. He is
now setting various Shakespearean works in a jazz music
context.
David's writing interests have also established him as a
respected commentator on management theory and he has published
numerous articles in national press as a business writer and
music critic. His interests in management have involved him in
the restructuring of the Australian Musician's Union.
His publications include 'Concepts of Time in Shakespeare',
'Management in the 21 Century' and numerous articles in the
national press.

Subtlety and Suppleness
"James' flute is ... played with a
subtlety and suppleness that almost belies the depth of musical
ideas being worked through."
The Age.

gone." David James
Exploration
David James' technique explores microtonal shifts in
intonation within a tonal context. This is further enhanced by an
intricate use of dynamics and sustain, occasionally
counterpointed by fast and colourful chromaticism reminiscent of
be-bop jazz virtuosi.
