Alan Lem carries
the flame of the ancient tradition of Music Therapy into the
Third Millenneum. The Greek physician Paracleus prescribed
special compositions for ailments in Athens more than 2000 years
ago. However, it was not until the 1970s that moves were made to
establish formal training centers for music therapy. Today music
therapy is established in universities around the world.
Alan started his musical voyage on classical guitar. In 1979 Alan
was awarded first prize in the Polish National Guitar Competition
and second prize for guitar composition. He holds a B.A. in
musicology from Warsaw University, a Masters degree in Music
Therapy from Melbourne University and is currently completing a
PhD in Music at the University of Western Sydney Nepean.
His work has been featured on ABC Radio National's Health
Report and at the VII International Music Medicine Conference. In
1998 Alan founded "Harmonic Encounters", a Sydney music event
inspired by the spiritual traditions of indigenous Australia,
Japan, Africa and the Himalayas. "Harmonic Encounters" is
designed to offer listeners a meditative journey and to stimulate
experiences of mental imagery. In this context Alan also enjoys
playing a custom designed guitar-lute and Tibetan Singing
Bowls.
His publications include the Music Therapy Collection, essays
on Music Therapy,1993; Mixed Spice, a collection of original
clarinet duets, 1999.
'reSonance: sounds for music
therapy' is Alan's latest work. On this CD Alan plays the
Tibetan bowls with multi-instrumentalist Michael Atherton,
Professor of Music and Head of the School of Contemporary Arts at
the University of Western Sydney. Mina Kanaradis provides some
soulful vocals on track four. 'reSonance provides a deeply
relaxing experience of improvised music.

Beyond Words
"...music improvisation...has the
unique capacity to accommodate even the most distinct
personalities and skills while allowing for meaningful
communication beyond the confines of verbal language."
